In short

What are the face-to-face courses?

They are four live, facilitated remediation courses — Probity and Ethics, Ethics and Professionalism, Professional Boundaries and a Reflection Workshop — run via video link on Zoom, with a certificate issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses on completion. Each carries 5 CPD hours and costs €600, or €550 with 10 or more online courses.

They are run virtually: face-to-face here means live and interactive with a facilitator and other participants, not a self-paced recording. Each runs live on a set date. Any of the four can be run one to one for €300 more.

They are for healthcare professionals facing a complaint, an investigation or a fitness to practise inquiry before the Medical Council, NMBI, the Dental Council, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland or CORU. No course decides a complaint. What a live session gives you is a facilitator, other professionals in the same position, and structured work on your own case: the insight and remedial action that the sanctions guidance of the Medical Council and of NMBI both refer to.

Key terms

What Ireland’s regulators mean by insight, reflection and remediation

Four terms run through a complaint from the first letter to an inquiry, and the sessions are built around them. They are not interchangeable, and knowing which one a letter is asking for changes how you respond.

Fitness to practise complaint and inquiry

The term Ireland’s five regulators use for their complaints processes. At the Medical Council, NMBI, the PSI and CORU a Preliminary Proceedings Committee decides whether a complaint goes further (at the Medical Council, after the chief executive officer’s screening and an Authorised Officer’s investigation), and may refer it on for an inquiry: before a Fitness to Practise Committee at the Medical Council and NMBI, or a Professional Conduct Committee at the PSI and CORU. At the Dental Council the Fitness to Practise Committee itself decides whether to hold an inquiry.

Insight

Understanding what went wrong, why it happened, and the effect it had on patients, colleagues and public confidence. NMBI’s Guidance on Sanctions says “Mere acknowledgement of the findings does not necessarily demonstrate insight.”

Reflection

Setting that understanding down honestly and in your own words, including what you would do differently and what you have already changed. CORU’s fitness to practise trends report says “Every complaint represents an opportunity for learning and reflection”.

Remediation

The concrete steps taken so that the same thing does not happen again — supervision, changes to how you work, focused courses — together with evidence that they happened. The Medical Council’s Sanctions Guidance says a doctor “may present evidence to the Council about how they have addressed issues or concerns”. Insight without remediation shows understanding but no change; remediation without insight shows change without an understanding of why it was needed.

The committees: Medical Council, NMBI, Dentists Act 1985, s.38, PSI and its committees, CORU.

Questions professionals ask us

Frequently asked questions

Are these courses actually face-to-face?

They are run live, via video link on Zoom. Face-to-face here means live and interactive with a facilitator and other participants, rather than a self-paced recording. You see and speak to the facilitator and the other participants on the video call. If you want a private session, a one-to-one version of any of the four courses is available for €300 on top of the course price.

How long is the course, and what is the format?

A live session via Zoom, on a set date. Each course carries 5 CPD hours, and the certificate is issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses on completion. Joining details are sent when you book.

Which of the four courses should I take?

Match the course to the complaint. Probity and Ethics is for honesty and dishonesty allegations. Ethics and Professionalism is for conduct, attitude and professionalism concerns. Professional Boundaries is for a boundaries breach with a patient or a colleague, and for consent and chaperone issues. The Reflection Workshop is for building insight and writing reflection that can be read closely by a committee. If your letter names more than one concern, contact us and we will help you choose.

Do I have to be facing a complaint to attend?

No. The courses are built for healthcare professionals facing a complaint, an investigation or a fitness to practise inquiry, but a concern raised by your employer, conditions attached to your registration, or an undertaking you have given are all reasons to come. You can attend whether or not you are currently registered.

What certificate do I get, and when?

A certificate issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses, on completion, emailed to you after the course. It records the course title, the 5 CPD hours, your name and the date. You can include it in a remediation plan or a written response to your regulator, alongside your own reflection.

Will a course resolve my complaint?

No course decides a complaint or an inquiry, and we do not promise any outcome. What a live course gives you is a dated certificate and structured work on insight, reflection and remediation that you can show. The Medical Council’s Sanctions Guidance says a doctor may present evidence of how they have addressed the concerns. Speak to your indemnifier, your union or professional body, or a solicitor before you send anything.

The next date is too late for my deadline. Can you run one sooner?

Contact us and we will try to arrange an earlier date. A one-to-one session is arranged around your diary, so it can be the quicker route. If you need more time to reply to your regulator, ask it: NMBI, for example, says you may request an extension of time to respond to a complaint.

What is the one-to-one option?

Any of the four courses can be run as a private one-to-one session for €300 extra, whether the course is bought on its own or with 10 or more online courses. It covers the same material, and the date is arranged around you.

What does a course cost?

€600 for a single live course. With 10 or more online courses in your basket it comes down to €550: €700 for the ten online courses plus €550 for the live course, €1,250 in total. A one-to-one session is €300 extra either way.

Should I take a live course or the online ones?

They do different jobs. The online courses let you cover each specific concern in a complaint and build a set of certificates at your own pace. A live session gives you a facilitator, discussion with other professionals in the same position, and structured exercises on your own case. You can do both: the live session for insight and reflection, the online courses for the specific concerns.

What if I cannot attend on the date I booked?

Tell us as soon as you know. Cancel seven days or more before the course date and the fee is refunded in full. Within seven days of the date, or if you do not attend, no refund is made. If we have to cancel or move a date, you choose between a full refund and a place on the next date. The full position is in our terms and conditions.

Who should I speak to before I reply to my regulator?

Your indemnifier, your union or professional body, or a solicitor, before you put anything in writing. For doctors, Medical Protection (MPS) offers advice and representation for Medical Council fitness to practise proceedings, and says these are not covered by the Clinical Indemnity Scheme; the MDU says it can support issues the Scheme does not cover. This is remediation, not legal advice.
